The contractor registration belongs to the business. The certificate belongs to the person holding the tools. O. Reg. 215/01 bars anyone from performing the functions of a certificate holder without the certificate, and the registered contractor is responsible for sending properly trained and certified technicians.

Two layers: the business and the technician
Which certificate covers what
- A G.1 holder may install, service, repair or remove a natural gas or propane appliance of any input.
- A G.2 holder may do the same on appliances with an input of 400,000 Btuh or less.
- A G.3 holder works under the supervision of a G.1, G.2 or DA holder, on a limited list of tasks.
Oil burners and propane piping have their own certificates.
When the work is subcontracted
A contractor who takes the job and hands it to another contractor is still a contractor in TSSA's eyes. Both must hold the registration and certification the work requires.
How to check
Search the company on TSSA's public register of authorized heating fuel contractors, and ask the technician on site for their certificate. In a RentSafeTO apartment building, the owner must show a certified tradesperson was used and log each service on fuel burning appliances with the date, the work and the technician's name.
Where Roundhouse fits
Gas work is done by TSSA registered contractors, and furnace, boiler and gas appliance work is done by certified gas technicians. See heating and cooling for rentals and how to get the registration details on our licensing and insurance page.
Questions
What if the contractor subcontracts the gas work?
TSSA says a contractor who agrees to do work for a customer and then subcontracts it to another contractor is still a contractor, and both have to meet the registration and certification requirements.
How do I check a contractor's TSSA registration?
Search TSSA's register of authorized heating fuel contractors on tssa.org by company name or authorization number. TSSA updates the register at the start of each month.
What does a G.2 gas technician certificate cover?
Under section 21 of O. Reg. 215/01, a G.2 holder may install, inspect, alter, purge, activate, repair, service or remove a natural gas or propane appliance with an input of 400,000 Btuh or less. A G.1 holder may do the same on an appliance of any input.
Does duct cleaning need a gas certificate?
Not if the cleaner works on no other part of the appliance except to clean the fan. Section 55 (3) of O. Reg. 215/01 exempts duct cleaning on that condition.
