# The licences behind every Roundhouse job

Updated 2026-10-03.

Ontario licenses most of the trades that work in a residential building, and some cities license the business as well as the person. Here is what each kind of work requires and who does it for us.

## Who does the licensed work

| Work | What Ontario requires | Who does it for us |
|---|---|---|
| Gas furnaces, boilers and appliances | A TSSA registered contractor and certified gas technicians | TSSA registered contractors |
| Electrical | An ECRA/ESA Licensed Electrical Contractor, and a 309A or 309C Certificate of Qualification, or a registered apprentice working under one, for each electrician | ECRA/ESA Licensed Electrical Contractors |
| Plumbing | A Certificate of Qualification as a Plumber (306A), or a registered apprentice working under one, everywhere in Ontario; plus the City's Plumbing Contractor licence in Toronto | Licensed plumbing contractors |
| Drains | A Drain Contractor licence in Toronto, which needs a Drain Layer licence first | Licensed drain contractors |
| Pest control | An operator licence for the business and an exterminator licence for each person | Licensed exterminators |
| Roofing | Working at heights training for each worker, valid three years | Trained roofing crews |
| A/C and heat pumps | A 313A or 313D certificate and the ODP card (ozone depletion prevention, under O. Reg. 463/10) | Certified technicians |
| General repairs | No trade licence. Repairs that cross into plumbing, electrical or gas work go to the trade certified for it. | Repair trades, and the certified trade where the work needs one |

We only use ECRA/ESA-Licensed Electrical Contractors.

## Gas work goes to TSSA registered contractors

Only a TSSA registered contractor may do fuels work in Ontario. Gas work is done by TSSA registered contractors, and each makes sure its gas technicians are certified for the equipment.

## Electrical work goes only to licensed contractors

ESA allows a general contractor to subcontract electrical work only to a Licensed Electrical Contractor, and requires its advertising to say so. You can look up any electrician we send in [ESA's contractor locator](https://licensing.esasafe.com/contractor-locator-tool/).

## Some trades need a certificate for the person

Under the Building Opportunities in the Skilled Trades Act, 2021 and O. Reg. 876/21, plumbing, electrical work and air conditioning are compulsory trades. The person doing the work holds a Certificate of Qualification, 306A for a plumber, 309A or 309C for an electrician, 313A or 313D for air conditioning and heat pumps, or is a registered apprentice working under one.

## Plumbing, drains and pest control license the business too

Toronto requires a Plumbing Contractor licence of any business that contracts, repairs or advertises plumbing, and a Drain Contractor licence of any business that cleans or repairs drains. Ontario licenses pest control the same way: an operator licence for the business, an exterminator licence for each person. Every job goes to a trade that holds the licence for that work.

## WSIB and insurance are checked, not assumed

Where WSIB coverage applies to a trade's work, it holds a current clearance, checked before booking and before every payment. A clearance lasts up to 90 days, and without one the principal may be liable for the contractor's unpaid WSIB amounts, so we keep the record for three years. No trade is booked until its insurance certificate is on file. Before the first job, the client receives the certificates in force for Roundhouse and the booked trade.

## Details and certificates on request

Licence and registration numbers, holders and expiry dates are not published on this website. Ask with your first job and we send the licence details for the trades on your work, with the insurance certificates. The company is Roundhouse Maintenance Group Inc., trading as Roundhouse Maintenance Group. [How we vet trades](https://roundhousegroup.ca/how-we-vet-trades/).

## Questions

### Does Roundhouse sell gas work itself?

Yes. Gas furnace, boiler and appliance work is done by TSSA registered contractors using certified gas technicians.

### How do I check an electrician's licence?

ESA runs a public contractor locator at licensing.esasafe.com. We only use ECRA/ESA-Licensed Electrical Contractors, and each licence is checked there before the first booking.

### Can I get a copy of Roundhouse's certificate of insurance?

Before the first job, we send the insurance certificate in force for Roundhouse and the booked trade.

### Do I need to check each trade's licence myself?

No. We check every licence before the first booking and track its expiry date. You can still ask for the details of the trades on your job.

### Why are there no licence, insurance or HST numbers on this page?

They are not published on the website. Licence and registration details and the certificate of insurance are sent to clients on request, and the HST number is printed on every invoice.
